Residential lighting design company INARAY won the Envision This Challenge last week, out of a pool of 25 contestants all hoping to help connect RVA’s Shockoe District by addressing dead zones in the neighborhood. For its comprehensive lighting plan for Shockoe, INARAY took home a $1,500 prize and also was the audience favorite, winning the $500 People’s Choice Award. Second prize went to smbw, a Shockoe-based architecture firm. The entrants presented their ideas to a panel of judges at a free public event on March 28 at Main Street Station.
A collaboration among the City of Richmond, Venture Richmond, the Shockoe Design District and the Greater Richmond Chamber’s i.e.* initiative, the Envision This Challenge invited local creatives to submit concepts that will connect, beautify and transform five specific areas of the Shockoe District of Richmond ,Virginia, into one identifiable destination that is highly walkable, inviting and seamlessly contiguous. The Shockoe District intends to be a place for everyone – a lively and distinct destination that reflects our community’s creativity, where people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can feel welcome to live, play, work, shop, create, socialize and deliberate, and easily access and enjoy the amenities the area has to offer.
The Envision This challenge is a step in a community driven planning process to develop a new vision for Shockoe. As an ideas competition, every concept was on the table for consideration, proposals were judged on creativity and innovation, plus economic feasibility.
