We are pleased to announce the 14 finalists that will compete in the 2013 Start-Up Competition (in alphabetical order)!

Richmond Food Cooperative
Sir Bentley Art
The Storytellers Channel
Success Without Limitations Inc.
Finalists will compete before a panel of judges on April 16 at Richmond CenterStage. The event is free and open to the public.
The finalists were selected in two ways. A group of local successful entrepreneurs from Lighthouse Lab Mentors and the 804RVA Mentor Network selected five contestants from the overall pool based on the following criteria:
- Evaluation of the viability of the business to be successful
- Evaluation of the innovative nature of the business
- Originality of the product or service in the market
The remainder of the finalists was selected by online public vote March 26 – 28 on www.ie-rva.org. One contestant was selected by both methods, resulting in 14 total finalists.
“Our Start-Up Competition continues to evolve, and we are once again thrilled with the RVA community’s support of its creative entrepreneurs. Our selection process this year expanded to include a blind review by a local group of successful entrepreneurs who volunteered to evaluate each contestant and select five distinct frontrunners. These results were combined with the outcome of the online public voting period to create our final list,” said Chrystal Neal, director of creativity and innovation at the Greater Richmond Chamber. “Whereas the ability to mount an effective digital marketing campaign is one component of being a successful entrepreneur in today’s marketplace, we added the peer review this year to help balance the process. Just as our contestants must always be innovating, our i.e.* initiative continuously evaluates and improves its processes.”
The public is invited to attend the free i.e.* Start-Up Competition, sponsored by Tumblr, on April 16 at Richmond CenterStage. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. The winner will be announced that evening and will receive a $10,000 cash prize, thanks to Cherry Bekaert LLP, as well as
- Six months of free office space at New Richmond Ventures
- $3,500 worth of IT strategy and implementation services from Imagine Simplicity
- Complimentary mentoring from 804RVA
New this year, the audience will select a People’s Choice Award Winner, who will receive $2,500 from First Capital Bank!
The Start-Up Competition is the third event in the i.e.* Entrepreneurial Trilogy, a series of free events designed to promote and encourage entrepreneurism in RVA. The Trilogy is presented by MWV, and thanks to MWV, Evergreen Enterprises and others, all events are free and open to the public.
